APPLICATION GUIDE | PRODUCT #904-061
The following use instructions are broad to address multiple applications. We recommend testing for product
compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE www.duratec1.com
Prepare & Catalyze
Temperature should be at least 64 F for both the product and the part. Mix Duratec with either a paint
shaker or a drill-mounted mixer. A paint stir stick will not be enough.
Catalyze the Duratec at 2.0 % by weight with a low hydrogen peroxide MEKP, like Norox 925. Only
catalyze what can be used in 12 minutes.
Sunshield is best applied by spraying. We
recommend HVLP air-assisted spray guns. A 1.6 - 1.8mm tip
is recommended. Use 34-40 psi air pressure. Adjust the needle and fan to provide the proper spray.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If thinning is required, we suggest the use of
Duratec 39UCE Reducer.
Apply
Option #1: In-Mold Prior to Laminating
Ensure mold is clean and free of silicone. When sprayed in-mold Sunshield we suggest use of a wax mold
release agent like TR108 or honey wax rather than or in conjunction with semi-perm release agents. This
will allow the proper surface tension essential for Sunshield to level and ow across the in-mold surface.
Adjust uid pressure and atomizing air to achieve an even pattern with fne droplets prior to spraying the mold.
The frst pass should be a dust coat that sets up for two minutes before further application. The dust coat
should be a light fog, not a continuous flm.
Additional coats of 4-5 mils can be applied, again allowing a minimum of two minutes to out-gas. Twelve mils
will provide a nice fnish with UV protection. Up to 22 mils can be applied if the part requires aggressive post
sanding.
The coating needs to be tacky free for each build coat to bond. Laminate polyesters and vinyl esters when the
Duratec has set up and does not transfer, but retains some tack. Cure time varies with temperature and air ow.
For epoxy laminating systems, a tack free surface is required. Increased heat up to 120 F will speed this process.
Remember the adhesion comes from the epoxy. Test the bond between the Duratec and your epoxy blend to
assure good adhesion.

Option #2: Finishing Parts
NOTE: For epoxy laminate, water washing with clean water and a heavy duty scrub sponge pad is
necessary before and after sanding. It is not necessary to water wash polyester or vinyl ester laminates.
Abrade the entire surface with 180 grit, providing mechanical tooth. Remove dust and acetone-wipe the surface.
Set up gun, mix, and catalyze as previously mentioned.
Pro Tip: Sunshield can by applied by brush or roller when topcoating wood.
The Duratec may need to be mechanically forced into severe porosity. The frst 2-3 mil passes can be worked with
a squeegee to fll the holes.
Additional coats can be applied after two minutes and while the surface is still tacky.
If re-coating the full cured Duratec is necessary, frst sand with 180 grit.
The fnal spray should be sanded with 400 grit and allowed to cure for 8 hours prior to fnal polishing.

Prepare & Catalyze
Temperature should be at least 64 F for both the product and the part.
Mix with either a paint shaker or a drill-mounted mixer. A paint stir stick will not be enough for a proper mix.
Catalyze the Duratec at 2.0 % by weight with a full strength MEKP, like Norox 925. Catalyze only an
amount that can be sprayed in 15 minutes, typically about a quart if using a HVLP spray gun. Mix well.
Apply
Duratec Hi-Gloss Topcoat should be applied by spraying. We recommend HVLP air-assisted spray guns.
Epoxy laminates should be washed with clean water and a heavy duty scrub sponge before and after
sanding. It is not necessary to water wash polyester, vinyl ester, or wood substrates. Abrade the entire
substrate surface with 180-grit to ensure proper mechanical adhesion. Wipe with a clean cloth. Do not use a
tack rag.
A 1.8 mm tip is recommended. Use 34-40 psi air pressure (at the gun). Adjust the needle and fan to provide
the proper spray. Use the lowest pressures possible to minimize orange peel.
The first coat should be a light dust coat. The
dust coating does not completely cover the surface. Wait at
least two minutes, and apply another light coat. Continue to make build passes of 4-6 mils, with two minute
intervals, until about 20 mils of product is on the surface.
Allow to cure at room temperature for at least one hour. At that time, cure can be accelerated by putting the
part in a warm room at 120 F.
Sand
Once the surface is fully cured, sand to remove any texture or orange peel. Use as fine a grit of paper as
is reasonable. Continue sanding with progressively finer grits, up to 1000 grit paper Allow at least eight
hours after sanding before re-coating or before polishing begins.
Compound and polish to high gloss. We recommend Aqua Buff 1000W or 1000F, followed by Aqua Buff
2000.
Mix well.
Apply
Duratec Hi-Gloss Coating should be applied by spraying.
The dust coating does not completely cover the surface. Wait at
least two minutes, and apply another light coat. Continue to make build passes of 4-6 mils, with two minute
intervals, until about 20 mils of product is on the surface.
Allow to cure at room temperature for at least one hour. At that time, cure can be accelerated by putting the
part in a warm room at 120 F
.
2000.

Catalyze with full strength MEKP catalyst at 2%, like Norox 925 (about 20 mill
iliters per quart).
Spray 3-4 passes over the repair, building up 12-15 mils. Allow at least two minutes between
passes. Do not allow the Duratec/gelcoat to cure beyond the sticky/thumbprint stage between
coats… usually about 30 minutes at 77 F when sprayed, faster in the cup. Feather the edge of
the repaired area.
Prepare
Temperature should be at least 64 F. Low temperatures extend cure time.
A test blend is recommended
, as every blend is unique and the cure must be tested and assured.
The cure time of the blend will vary, as every gelcoat is di erent. Note the cup-gel time.
If repairing, remove or
Once surface cure is sandable (approx. 2-4 hours) sand as outlined below to cut surface and allow
full cure.
Sand
Sand
when the surface has cured enough to not clog your paper. Start with the finest grit that is
reasonable for the surface finish. With a good finish starting with 400 grit is possible.
The surface must be open for at least 8 hours between initial sanding and polishing. The open time
allows for styrene release and full cure.
Sand with progressively finer grits like 400, 600, 800, 1000. Compound and polish with products
formu-lated for gelcoat like Aqua Buff 1000 and Aqua Buff 2000.
Cure Times
Duratec High Gloss Additive is an air-cure product. Each gelcoat manufacturer and color option will
have a different cure time. Those cure times, combined with factors like ambient temperature,
humidity, catalyst ratio, and mil depth can result in a spectrum of cure times. Some surfaces will be
ready within two hours, others may take more than 24-hours for full cure. Avoid spraying in
temperatures below 64 F, and where possible, increase heat near part to improve cure time.

PLEASE NOTE
Catalyze with full strength MEKP catalyst at 2% (about 20 mililiters per quart).
Spray at least 2 passes over the repair, building up an additional 8 mils or more. Be sure to get
back on
to the frst passes while they are sticky. Cover all the previously coated area. Feather the
edge of the repaired area.
OPTION #3: Blend 10-25% Duratec 904-001 into the tooling gelcoat for a gelcoat upgrade.
This will improve the fow and spray characteristics of tooling gelcoat.

Prepare & Catalyze
Temperature should be at least 64 F for both the product and the part.
Mix with either a paint shaker or a drill-mounted mixer. A paint stir stick will not be enough for a proper mix.
For pattern or part
preparation, sand with 220 grit. Wipe down with a rag wetted with acetone. Do not use a
tack rag, as many tack rags will transfer materials to the surface. Seek a dust-free area around the pattern to
reduce contamination while the Duratec is liquid.
Catalyze the Duratec at 2.0 % by weight with a full strength MEKP, like Norox 925. Mix only an amount that can
be sprayed in 15 minutes. Mix well.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If solvent is required, Duratec Reducer 39UCE-3 is the best
choice. MEK solvent is a good second choice. Discuss other options with our Technical Team prior to use.
If extended gel time is needed, check out Duratec Gel Time Extender.
Apply
Pattern Surfacing Coating should be applied by spraying. We recommend HVLP air-assisted spray guns.
A 1.8 mm tip is recommended. Use 34-40 psi air pressure (at the gun). Adjust the needle and fan to provide
the proper spray. Use the lowest pressures possible to minimize orange peel.
The first coat should be a light dust coat. The dust coating does not completely cover the surface. Wait at least
two minutes, and apply another light coat. Continue to make build passes of 4-5 mils, with two minute
intervals, until at least 20 mils of product is on the surface.
Apply build coats before the previous coat has tacked-off. The coating should be wet enough to transfer to a
fingertip. If the previous coat has cured enough that it will not transfer then allow for full cure and sand before
continuing.
Allow to cure fully. Sand and wait at least eight hours before polishing.

emperature should be at least 64 F. Low temperatures extend cure time.
Ensure the surface is clean and free of both chemical and environmental contaminants. If needed,
slightly sand the surface with 120-220 grit and then wipe off surface with a clean (not tack) rag.
Thoroughly stir the Duratec Crystal Clear Sealer in the can prior to catalyzing.
Catalyze Crystal Clear Sealer with a full strength MEKP, like Norox 925. Catalyst ratio is 2% by weight.
Due to the rapid gel time, mix only the amount that can be applied within 15-18 minutes.
NOTE: Higher temperatures yield a shorter pot life and gel time, while lower temperatures yield a
longer pot life and gel time.
Apply Sealer
Roll, brush, or spray the sealer on. If spraying, apply using air-assisted or airless spray at lowest
practical pressure. Wipe away any excess using a clean white cloth or paper towel. Do not use tack
rag.
Topcoating (Urethane, Polyester, Vinyl Esters)
In general, sealer will be ready to topcoat within an hour or two, but may be ready faster depending
on amount of sealer used and ambient temperature.
Sanding the sealer prior to
topcoating is not necessary if the time between sealing and topcoating is
less than eight hours. If more than 8 hours have passed, we suggest sanding with 180-200 to provide
mechanical tooth for the bond.
Topcoating (Epoxy)
Adhesion between the Duratec Crystal Clear Sealer and epoxy is dependent on a mechanical bond
with the epoxy rather than a chemical bond. We advocate for a cure time of at least eight hours.
Abrade the surface with sandpaper (180-220) prior to topcoating with epoxy.
The following use instructions are broad to address multiple applications. We recommend testing for product
compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
The following use instructions are broad to address multiple applications. We recommend testing for product
compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE
Mix
Mix thoroughly with a drill-mounted mixer or paint shaker. Hand stirring is not enough.
Duratec Surface Primer is designed to be applied when the ambient temperature and part
temperature are both above 64 F.
Catalyze
Catalyze with full strength MEKP catalyst at 2% by weight (approx. 20 cc per quart). Norox 925 is a

good choice.
Catalyze only what will be used in 10-15 minutes. Mix well.
Apply
Surface Primer is best applied by spray using an HVLP gun, or with a gelcoat application system.
Seek a fine spray, and use the lowest pressure that allows an even spray fan. (approximately 40 psi).
A 2.0-2.4
mm tip is recommended. If applying by brush or roller, please speak with our Technical
Support T
eam.
Apply at least 10 mils, building 4-5 mils at a time,
in a crosshatch pattern for even and complete
cure.
Allow time (2-3 min) between passes for out-gassing. Recoat before the primer has set up
and lost its tack. If the primer cures completely wait at least eight hours, sand, and recoat.
In-Mold Tip: If spraying in-mold, the first pass should be a light dust coat to allow proper surface
tension to form.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If solvent is required, do not add a
cetone. Duratec
Reducer 39UCE is the best choice. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Solvent (MEK) will work for most users.
High quality urethane reducers are good choices. Lacquer Thinners are not recommended.
If extended gel time is needed, check out Duratec Gel
Time Extender.
Sand
Sand when the primer has cured. Start with the finest paper that will remove the surface profile. If
sprayed well, 220 or 320 grit paper is a good starting point.
Polish
Wait at least eight hours from the start of sanding before polishing or topcoating.
Aqua Buff 1000 and 2000 are good choices for compounding and polishing Duratec Surface Primer.

SANDING PRIMER
APPLICATION GUIDE | PRODUCT #707-061
The following use instructions are broad to address multiple applications. We recommend testing for product
compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE
Duratec products leave the factory mixed for optimal performance. If thinning is required, we
suggest the use of Duratec 39UCE Reducer. Duratec Reducer duplicates the solvents that the Primer
contains and will quickly reduce viscosity. MEK Thinner is a reasonable alternative. Add as little
thinner as possible.
Prepare
T
emperature should be at least 64 F for both the product and the part.
Duratec 707-061 contains functional
llers that will sink to the bottom of the container. Use either a
paint shaker or a drill-mounted mixer. A paint stir stick will not be enough to mix up.
We recommend HVLP air-assisted spray guns. A 2.5 mm tip or larger is ideal for Duratec EZ Sanding
Primer. Use 34-40 psi air pressure (at the gun). Adjust the needle and fan to provide the proper spray.
Catalyze
Catalyze the Duratec at 2.0 % by weight with a full strength MEKP, like Norox 925. Mix for one minute
(when using a cup gun). Only catalyze what can be sprayed in 12 minutes.
Apply
Apply 5-7 mils and immediately apply another 5-7 mils in the opposite direction for a crosshatch efect.
You should spray multiple passes of 5-7 mils, allowing a minimum of two minutes to out-gas between
coats. Up to 40 mils can be applied if the part requires aggressive post sanding.
Do not allow the EZ Sanding Primer to become tack-free between build coats. If the EZ Sanding Primer
becomes tack-free, allow it to cure completely, sand with 180-220 grit, and recoat.
compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE
Catalyze
Catalyze with full strength MEKP Catalyst at 2% by weight (approx. 20 cc per quart). Norox 925 is a
good choice. Catalyze only what will be used in 10-15 minutes. Mix well.
Apply
Duratec Base
Primer is best applied by spray using an HVLP gun, or with a gelcoat application
system. Seek a fine spray, and use the lowest pressure that allows an even spray fan.
(approximately 40 psi). A 2.0 mm tip is recommended. If applying by brush or roller, please speak
with our Technical Support Team
Apply at least 10 mils, building 4-5 mils at a time, for even and complete cure. Recoat before the primer
has set up and lost its tack. If the primer cures completely wait at least eight hours, sand, and recoat.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If solvent is required, do not add acetone.
Duratec Reducer 39UCE-3 is the best choice. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Solvent (MEK) will work for most users.
High quality urethane reducers are good choices. Lacquer Thinners are not recommended.
If extended gel time is needed, check out Duratec Gel Time Extender.
Sand
Sand when the primer has cured. The grit of sandpaper that should be used will be determined by the
surface quality of cured primer and your desired outcome.
PLEASE NOTE
Catalyze
Catalyze with full strength MEKP catalyst at 2% by weight (approx. 20 cc per quart). Norox 925 is a
good choice. Catalyze only what will be used in 10-15 minutes. Mix well.
Apply
Sanding Primer is best applied by spray using an HVLP gun, or with a gelcoat application system.
Seek a fine spray, and use the lowest pressure that allows an even spray fan. (approximately 40 psi). A
2.0 mm tip is recommended. If applying by brush or roller, please speak with our Technical Support
T
eam.
Apply at least 10 mils, building 4-5 mils at a time, for even and complete cure. Recoat before the
primer has set up and lost its tack. If the primer cures completely wait at least eight hours, sand, and
recoat.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If solvent is required, Duratec Reducer 39UCE-3 is
the best choice. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Solvent (MEK) will work for most users. High quality urethane
reducers are good choices. Lacquer Thinners are not recommended.
If extended gel time is needed, check out Duratec Gel Time Extender.
Sand
Sand when the primer has cured. Start with the finest paper that will remove the surface profile. If
sprayed well, 220 or 320 grit paper is a good starting point.
Polish
Wait at least eight hours from the start of sanding before polishing or topcoating.
Aqua Buff 1000 and 2000 are good choices for compounding and polishing Sanding Primer

Mix well.
Apply
Duratec HV Hi-Gloss Coating should be applied by spraying.
Do not use a
tack rag.
A
2.0-2.5 mm tip is recommended. Use 34-40 psi air pressure (at the gun). Adjust the needle and fan to
provide the proper spray. Use the lowest pressures possible to minimize orange peel.
The first coat should be a light dust coat. The dust coating does not completely cover the surface. Wait at
least two minutes, and apply another light coat. Continue to make build passes of 4-6 mils, with two minute
intervals, until about 20 mils of product is on the surface.
Allow to cure at room temperature for at least one hour. At that time, cure can be accelerated by putting the
part in a warm room at 120
F.
Sand
Once the surface is fully cured, sand to remove any texture or orange peel. Use as fine a grit of paper as
is reasonable. Continue sanding with progressively finer grits, up to 1000 grit paper Allow at least eight
hours after sanding before re
-coating or before polishing begins.
Compound and polish to high gloss. We recommend Aqua Buff 1000W or 1000F
, followed by Aqua Buff
2000.

compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE
Prepare
Duratec Flat Quick L
eveling T opcoat (QLT) is designed to be applied to f iberglass and other substrates
to achieve a tack free and fully cured surface when catalyzed with MEKP.
N
o wax or other inhibitors are required for a tack- free cure.
Polyester & VE laminate surfaces that haven t fully cured can be sprayed over with no further prep work.
Fully cured laminates, including epoxy surfaces, should be sanded prior to application, 36 to 180 grit
can be used as required to prep the surface. Any surface imperfections or shaping should be done to
prepare surface for best results with Flat Quick Leveling Topcoat. Clean the dust from all surfaces prior
to applying QLT with a clean cloth, no surface cleaner is necessary.
Wood, concrete, and other surfaces may need one of our sealers (823 or 1800) prior to applying QLT for
best results.
Mix
Mix thoroughly with a drill-mounted mixer or paint shaker. Hand stirring is not enough.
Catalyze
Catalyze with MEKP Catalyst at 2% by weight (approx. 20 cc per quart). Norox 925 is a recommended
choice. Mix well.
Apply
Spraying
We recommend HVLP air-assisted spray guns. A 2.0 mm tip or larger is ideal. Use 34-40 psi air pressure
(at the gun). Adjust the needle and fan to provide the proper spray.
Multiple passes should be used to build up the desired thickness to hide surface irregularities if needed.
On smooth surfaces it can be applied in a thinner film (8-10 mils) and still cure completely.
Large
Airless Spray Equipment
For large areas QLT can be sprayed through airless spray equipment just like normal gel coat.
Tip size and pressures will be different for each brand, style and type of unit, so some testing Prior to
spraying the first part will be required.
themselves as to contents and suitability. All claim requests must be made in writing and are subject to review, including storage temperature verification and retain evaluations. The
exclusive remedy for all proven claims is replacement of our materials. In no event shall we be liable for special, incidental or consequential damages, including damages caused in transit
(exworks terms). Nothing herein shall constitute a warranty, expressed or implied, including any warranty of merchantability or fitness, nor is protection from any law or patent to be
inferred. All patent and trademark rights are reserved. www.hawkeyeind.com
The following use instructions are broad to address multiple applications. We recommend testing for product
compatability with your process. Please contact our Tech Team at (909) 546-1160 with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE
Rolling & Brushing
Duratec Flat Quick Leveling Topcoat was designed for spray application, and performs best through
that application. If spraying is not an option, we recommend testing to ensure brush or roll will
provide desired results. We recommend use of a low nap roller or a 2″ synthetic brush. Rolling or
brushing will likely require one or more coat to achieve the desired look, depending on the
substrate s texture or color. Wait for the surface to become somewhat tack free (nothing coming off
on your finger) before applying another coat.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If solvent is required, Duratec Reducer
39UCE-3 is the best choice, at 3-5% ratio by weight.
We do not recommend lacquer thinner for use
with this product.
FINAL FINISH
Duratec Flat Quick Leveling Topcoat is designed as a coating for rough, exposed laminate/substrate.
With proper application the coating will level and flow over the rough surface, creating a smoother
finished surface without sanding and buffing.
If your part/surface requires an elevated surface profile, or higher gloss level, using a primer and a
higher gloss topcoat might be a better option.
Reach out to our Technical Sales Team at 909-546-1160 for questions about the right product choice
or sanding/buffing the Flat Quick Leveling Topcoat.

Prepare & Catalyze
T
emperature should be at least 64 F for both the product and the part.
Duratec Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss Topcoat should be mixed either by stirring, paint mixer (gallons), stand or drill-
mounted mixer (pails or drums). Ensure thorough mix.
If topcoating, substrate/laminate surface should be sanded with 220 grit, and wiped down with an acetone
damped rag, prior to application of Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss Topcoat. Do not use tack cloth.
Catalyze the Duratec at 2.0 % by weight with a low hydrogen peroxide MEKP, like Norox 925H. Mix well.
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. Adjust tip size first. If thinning is required, we suggest
the use of Duratec 39UCE Reducer.
IN-MOLD USE: Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss Topcoat can be sprayed in mold, but equipment and technique will need to be
adjusted in comparison to tooling gelcoat application in order to support the lower-viscosity Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss
Topcoat. We suggest use of an HVLP gun over a dump-gun and use of wax mold release agent like TR108 or honey
wax rather than or in conjunction with semi-perm release agents. Wax allows the proper surface tension essential for
the product to level and flow across the in-mold surface. If you are experiencing severe fisheyes when applying in-
mold, it is likely the semi-perm release agent is preventing the necessary surface tension.
Apply
Duratec Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss Topcoat should be applied by spraying. We recommend an
HVLP air-assisted spray
guns or with a gelcoat application system.
A 1.8 -2.2 mm tip is recommended (depending on part size). Use 34-40 psi air pressure (at the gun). Adjust
the needle and fan to provide the proper spray.
The first coat should be a light dust coat. The dust coating does not completely cover the surface. Wait at
least two minutes, and apply another light coat. After two additional minutes, begin build coats of 4-5 per
pass, waiting 2 minutes or more between passes.
Apply at least 18 mils for an even and complete cure. Recoat before the topcoat has set up and lost it s tack.
If the topcoat cures completely, wait at least eight hours, sand, and recoat. Wait at least eight hours from the
start of sanding before polishing or topcoating.

Prepare & Catalyze
Temperature should be at least 64 F for both the product and the part.
Mix with either a paint shaker or a dr
ill-mounted mixer. A paint stir stick will not be enough to mix up.
The primer should be sanded with 220 grit, and wiped down with an acetone damped rag. Do not use
tack clothes.
Catalyze the Duratec at 2.0 % by weight with a low hydrogen peroxide MEKP, like Norox 925H
Additional solvent is not needed for most spray guns. If thinning is required, we suggest the use of
Duratec 39UCE Reducer.
TIP: When sprayed in-mold, we suggest use of a wax mold release agent like TR108 or honey wax rather than
or in conjunction with semi-perm release agents. This will allow the proper surface tension essential for the
product to level and fow across the in-mold surface.
Apply
Duratec Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss Topcoat should be applied by spraying. We recommend applying with
an HVLP air-
assisted spray gun or a gelcoat application system.
A 1.8 or 2.0 mm tip is recommended. Use 34-40 psi air pressure (at the gun). Adjust the needle and fan to
provide the proper spray.
Wait at least eight hours from the
start of sanding before polishing or topcoating.

underneath product.
Completely cure putties, pastes and
compounds before applying product.
Cracking Product sprayed too thickly, too fast.
Increase the number of passes, adding dwell time between coats.
Dimples (Craters)
Film build up too rapid, solvent trapped in product.
Increase the number of passes to achieve desired thickness. Allow for ash o between passes.
Fisheyes
Substrate contaminated.
Do not use a tack rag . Ensure rag does
not leave contaminant on surface.
Spray in a clean area to minimize airborne
dust, water, waxes, and/or silicones.
Spray with dry fltered air.
