Catalyst Types
Catalyst used for internal ATC QC is Arkema Luperox DDM-9. An equivalent catalyst is Luperox K1.
Catalysts in the same category are Syrgis Norox MEKP-9; Syrgis Superox 702; Norpol Peroxide 1; Syrgis
Andonox KP-9; Akzo Cadox D-50a. Hi-Dimer type catalysts used for VE resins and gelcoats can be used
but can slow down the reaction and can increase exotherm. High hydrogen peroxide content (Luperox
DeltaX-9), low exoterm blends (Andonox KP-9LE) and CHP blends (MCP) catalysts are to be avoided.
Catalysation
Catalyst levels are stated by volume. If used by weight, adjust catalyst levels taking specific gravity of the various catalysts into account.
Caution: Follow recommended catalyst types and ratios. Do not exceed a catalyst ratio of 1.8% by volume, nor catalyze below
1.25% in hot temperatures. For consistent results, maintain the recommended shop temperature and a constant catalyst ratio.
Equipment
Crestamould

T27 is dispensed through an internal mix catalyst pumping/ spraying system with a
ram-type equipment such as the Magnum Venus Industries Putty Unit (www.mvpind.com); the GS
Manufacturing BWX Putty Dispensing System (www.gsmfg.com); or Glascraft, (www.glascraft.com).
The spray fan is obtained by selecting larger than normal spray fan angles for the nozzles (i.e. 70
o
nominal
angle). Vertical hang is non-sagging up to 10mm (3/8 ) wet on wet. An alternative to spraying for large
parts is to use a splatter head arrangement. This allows higher output with less overspray but induces
surface texture. to 5mm (3/16 ) can be applied, waiting for a relative cool-down between the passes,
to approx. 43
o
-49
o
C (110
-120
o
F). This is repeated until the desired thickness is achieved. The coverage is
1 litre/1mm/m2; or 0.624 gallons/board ft. (12 x12 x1 ).
Application
The first coat is critical. A layer of no more than 3mm (1/8 ) and no less than 1.5mm (1/16 ) should be
uniformly applied and allowed to gel, exotherm and cool down. Duration approx. 1 – 1.5 hours. Once this
first coat is down to room temperature, subsequent coats of 3mm (1/8 ) to 5mm (3/16 ) can be applied,
waiting for a relative cool-down between the passes to approx. 43
o
-49
o
C (110
o
-120
o
F). This is repeated
until the total desired thickness is achieved. Most applications aim for 20 – 25mm (3/4 – 1 ) total thickness
prior to machining. The secondary bonding window is such that no sanding is required between coats if
the job is stopped. The coverage is 1 litre/1mm/m
2
(0.6 gallons per inch per ft
2
). Tool marks are removed
with 40 grit sandpaper. The surface needs no further preparation prior to sanding primer application.

www.scottbader.com
Machining
Use carbide tools. Use a positive rake; 2,3 or 4 flutes. End-mill tools are used for the majority of the work,
ball-end tools for finishing. Calculate a chip load of 0.4 – 0.5mm (0.015 – 0.020 ) to set the feed rate versus
rpm versus number of flutes. Adjust speeds to avoid overheating or overloading and material pull out. Do
not leave the CNC unattended. Brush or blow off material as it accumulates on flat surfaces. If possible, blow
air at tool-tip. A shop temperature of 24
o
C (75
o
F) and above will improve machining and reduce tool wear.
Colder temperature will make the Crestamould

T27 harder. Remove shavings daily from part.
Caution: Accumulation of shavings that were produced from under- or overcatalyzed material can
generate heat and smoke in extreme cases with charing of the material. To avoid this, maintain
recommended catalyzation percentages (see page 1), remove shavings regularly and fill shavings in
metal drums, pack it down, add water and store outside.
Additional Information
Shelf life
Crestamould

T27 is a stable product, and adequate long-term storage conditions will result in a shelf life
of 12 months. Do not store outside or in direct sunlight. After this time, the gel time may drift, and should
be checked before use.
Storage
The product should be kept in securely enclosed containers. Storage should be in a dry place and out
of direct sunlight. The temperature should be between 18
o
-25
o
C (65
o
-77
o
F). Allow material to reach shop
temperature before using. Keep containers closed to eliminate styrene evaporation and to avoid change in
properties of the material. Rotate stock to use oldest batch numbers first.
Mixing
In terms of Elasticity, ES99 improved the Modulus of Elasticity as compared to all competitive adhesives.
Indeed ES99 was the ONLY adhesive that improved the elasticity of the samples. All other adhesives
reduced the elasticity compared to the control samples made without adhesive.
* An independent 3rd party prepared 5-ply fiberglass/resin panels using ES99 and all major competitive adhesives as well as a
control panel constructed without adhesive. Five (5) samples from each panel were prepared and tested per ASTM D790
protocol by CERL/MCA laboratories. Lab report is available upon request.
In tests per ASTM D790, independ
ent laboratories* found ES99 improved the strength of samples almost 20% and 30% compared
t
o competitive adhesives. In fact, ES99 samples were found to be even stronger than samples made without adhesive.

PA-133-PMMN is a reinforced polyester adhesive. It is designed specifically for bonding FRP parts and forming contours.
This product offers excellent adhesion and shear strength. Curing time may be adjusted to suit the customer s specific
needs by varying the level of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) initiator.

With proper surface preparation this product offers superior adhesion to cured FRP parts. It is not recommended to
solvent-wash the bonded surfaces before application. End users should determine the suitability of this product to their
process. There can be issues with achieving a good bond to highly cured gel coat and gel coated parts. In cases
where the gel coat is over a month old, has been post-cured, or could otherwise be highly cured, the user should test
for adequate adhesion and may need to sand and clean the part before applying the adhesive material.

Application: PA-133-PMMN may be used for general bonding and to fill cracks, corners, and angles where
reinforcement is required. Surfaces to be bonded should be free of dust, waxes, oils, and mold release agents.
Sanding may be used to enhance adhesion as long as dust is completely removed. Cleaning surfaces with solvent is
not recommended.

Storage and Handling: PA-133-PMMN should be properly stored in closed, opaque containers at temperatures not
exceeding 77 F (25 C). Store only in original containers. To avoid decomposition keep away from direct sunlight and
excess heat. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for further details on safety and storage.
Surface Preparation
The surface to be bonded can affect the strength and durability of the bond joint. Appropriate treatment may be
required to ensure that there are no traces of oil, grease, dirt or release agents through the use of a degreasing
agent, for instance acetone or another degreasing agent on the joint surfaces.

Mechanically abrading or chemically etching degreased surfaces can make bond joints more durable and
stronger. If abrading, a second treatment of degreasing is highly recommended.

Do not use petrol (gasoline), low grade alcohol or paint thinners.

i) Metals
Typically, the surface should be clean and dry by using an alcohol/solvent wipe and allowing the solvent to
evaporate before application. Certain metals, such as carbon steel may also require mechanical abrasion and a
subsequent alcohol solvent wipe prior to bonding.

ii) Thermoplastics
The surface must be clean, dust-free and dry. A suitable solvent such as iso-propanol can be used to degrease.

iii) Composites
The surface must be clean, dust-free and dry. This can be achieved by the use of proprietary strippable cloths
such as peel-ply (without lubricant contaminates). The laminate should be fully cured prior to bonding and
if the laminate surfaces are more than 3 days old, it is recommended that the surface must be cleaned with a
suitable solvent or cleaner with a lint-free, clean cloth prior to bonding.

Surface preparation, such as mechanical abrasion, is likely to be needed on gel coat surfaces and moulded
surfaces where release agents are likely to be present. When bonding epoxy laminates please test bond strength
prior to application.

Application
Prior to bonding, ensure the substrate surface is clean by following the surface preparation instructions provided.
Bulk dispensing equipment should be in good operating condition. Dispense the adhesive at a slow rate initially onto a
non-bonding surface until the mixed bead colour is uniform. Check the dispensed bead for cure quality before beginning
the bonding process.

Dispense enough adhesive to fill the bond gap before parts are mated. Avoid dry bonds by using adequate pressure to
mate parts and clamp properly to prevent joint movement. The working time is the approximate time after mixing that the
adhesive is still usable. The bonding process must be completed before the working time of the mixed adhesive expires.
The viscosities of both adhesive and activator are affected by temperature. The adhesive, activator and parts to be bonded
should be allowed to attain workshop temperature of between 18 C and 25 C (64
o
F and 77
o
F) prior to bonding. The
operating temperature should be maintained during the bonding process and until the adhesive is sufficiently cured to allow
movement of the assembly. Typically, such movement may be possible after the fixture time of the adhesive is achieved.
Ambient temperature, bondline thickness and the substrate materials being bonded can all affect the fixture time.
For industrial/commercial use only. Not to be used in household applications. The user must determine the suitability of
a selected adhesive for a given substrate and application. Contact your local Scott Bader representative for questions or
assistance with the selection of adhesives for your use. This product is intended for use by skilled individuals at their own
risk. Recommendations contained herein are based on information we believe to be reliable.
Storage and Shelf Life
Crestabond products should be stored in their original container out of direct sunlight. The bulk product or cartridge
material should be opened only immediately prior to use. The expiry date is indicated on the product labels.

The shelf life is defined from date of manufacture when stored at a recommended temperature between 2 C and 23 C (36
o
F
and 73
o
F). It is highly recommended that products should never be frozen. Exposure to temperatures above 23 C (36
o
F) will
reduce the shelf life of these materials. Exposure above 35 C (95
o
F) of activators, including the cartridges, should be avoided
as the reactivity of the product is quickly diminished.
For optimum results parts should be clean and free from any
contamination on the bonding surface. If parts do not mate flush
together use a higher viscosity product to compensate for the gap.
Factors Affecting Cure Speed Include: GAP: Thin bond line results in
faster cure speed. Larger gaps will lengthen cure speed. HUMIDITY:
Cure and fixture times can be influenced by the humidity conditions at
the time of assembly. The higher the RH the faster cure and fixture
times will be. Fixture time data based on our testing is conducted at
50% relative humidity.
General Instructions
The product is best used at temperatures between 65 F and
80 F. Temperatures below 65 F will slow the cure speed of the
material and viscosities will be higher. Temperatures above
80 F will cause the material to cure faster and viscosities will
be lower. For consistent dispensing maintain temperature in
the above mentioned range.
For optimum bond strength and to insure maximum
performance in the finished assembly mate parts together
within the specified work time of the adhesive. Make sure the
bond joint has uniform coverage and that a sufficient amount
of adhesive is in the bond area. It is important to have the
adhesive applied, parts aligned and positioned, within the
established work times for the product. To ensure maximum
performance in the finished assembly parts should remain
undisturbed until the fixture time is reached.

TECHNICAL DATA SHEET

1. DESCRIPTION

BD420FX is a two-part methacrylate, flexibilized, structural bonding adhesive designed for the
structural bonding of various substrates, including fiberglass, steel, aluminum, and various
plastics (not low energy surfaces). Combined at a ratio of 10:1, BD420FX has a working time
of 3 to 7 minutes and achieves nearly 90 percent of its ultimate strength in 10 to 15 minutes at
room temperature curing. BD420FX provides high strength and very flexible bonds to the
above reference surfaces with generally no preparation effort. BD420FX bonds very strongly
to steel, stainless steel, and aluminum metals and will allow a great deal of movement of the
substrates due to CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) differences. BD420FX adhesives
are NOT UV STABLE, AND WILL YELLOW OVER TIME and must not be used to create
imperceptible seams in countertops or for seaming countertops. This yellowing will not affect
bond performance, but will affect bond appearance.

6. HANDLING AND APPLICATION:

BD420FX resin (Part A) and activator (Part B) are flammable. Contents include Methacrylate ester
and acids. Keep containers closed after use. Wear gloves and safety glasses to avoid skin and eye
contact. Wash with soap and water after skin contact. In case of eye contact, flush with water for 15
minutes and get medical attention. Harmful if swallowed. Keep out of the reach of children. Keep
away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Do not smoke cigarettes or anything else while handling or
near the product. Refer to the BD420FX Safety Data Sheet for more complete safety instruction. To
assure maximum bond strength, surfaces must be mated together within the specified working time,
and all clamps affixed within that time. Use sufficient material to ensure that the joint is completely
filled when parts are mated and clamped. Avoid over clamping parts, which may cause a dry joint or
a joint starved of adhesive. All adhesive application, part positioning, fixturing, and clamping should
occur before the working time of the adhesive has expired. After the indicated working time, parts
must remain undisturbed until the fixture time is completed. Components bonded, adhesive, and
shop temperature can have a significant effect on the work and fixture time of the adhesive.
Application of BD420FX adhesive at temperatures between 65 F and 85 F (18 C and 30 C) will
ensure proper cure. Temperatures below 65 F (18 C) will slow cure and fixture speed. BD420FX
adhesives will still react, but will take longer. Temperatures above 85 F (18 C and 30 C) will increase
cure and fixture speeds, and there s a risk that the adhesive will be hardened or too thick to bond
materials. The viscosities of BD420FX adhesives are affected by temperature.

NOTE: Because of the curing features of BD420FX adhesives, large amounts of heat are generated
when large masses of material are mixed at one time. The heat generated by the exotherm resulting
from mixing large amounts of adhesive can result in a boiling of the monomer in the adhesive (methyl
methacrylate), resulting in the release of trapped air, steam and volatile gasses. To prevent this, use
only enough material as needed for use within the working time for the product, and confine the gap
or spread out the material to no more than .50 inches.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

The shelf life of BD420FX is twelve (12) months from the date of manufacture based upon continuous
storage at room temperature (77 F or 25 C). Storage of BD420FX adhesives in refrigerated
compartments will extend the shelf life even more. Do not store BD420FX adhesive or any other
adhesives in a refrigerator which has food or lunch products in them. Be sure to bring BD420FX
adhesives to room temperature for 24 hours before use, otherwise longer cure and fixture times may
be expected. Long-term storage at temperatures above room temperature will shorten the shelf life of
BD420FX adhesives considerably. Storage at temperatures above 100 F or 38 C could shorten the
shelf life to less than one month. BD420FX adhesives contain no water, so freezing of the adhesive
for short periods is permissible, but is not encouraged.
