4.HEALTH INFORMATION
If panels are cut, milled, drilled, sanded or otherwise abraded, wood dust airborne particles will
be generated, the following exposure limits should be observed:
Wood dust OSHA PEL: TWA = 15.00 mg/m3 total dust
TWA= 5.00 mg/m3 breathable value
Wood dust in some Countries might not be regulated, but in the U.S. where it is now regulated,
it is as an organic dust under the (PNOR) Particulates Not Otherwise Regulated.
EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE:
Eyes: Might cause mild irritation, tearing, redness or blurry vision.
Skin: Irritation or itching might be caused by prolonged exposure to Balsa wood dust.
Breathing: Overexposure to high Balsa wood dust concentration may cause coughing,
sneezing, breathing passages dryness, irritation or obstruction or allergic reactions.
FIRST AID
Eyes: Flush eyes carefully with clean running water lifting upper and lower eye lids. If
conditions persist, seek professional assistance.
Skin: Wash thoroughly skin overexposed areas, avoid scratching skin.
If severe conditions arise where asphyxia is evident, take person to fresh air, if breathing
difficulties persist seek professional assistance, administer oxygen or give artificial respiration
as condition and resources might apply.
5.PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT TO USE
EYE PROTECTION: Operators or persons working in sanding, cutting, drilling or routing areas
should use goggles.
AVOID DUST CONCENTRATION: Well-designed exhaust systems will avoid excessive dust
concentration in working areas, combined with good ventilation prevent eye, skin or breathing
system complications.
CLOTHING: No special clothing is required, when conditions require long sleeve clothing should
be used.
6.WARNING LABEL
We provide a WARNING LABEL as a reminder to our Customers:
WOOD DUST
WARNING!
SANDING, SAWING, ROUTING, DRILLING OR OTHER FORMS OF
ABRADING MACHINING OPERATIONS PRODUCE WOOD DUST WHICH
UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS MIGHT CAUSE FLAMMABLE OR
EXPLOSIVE HAZARD.
AVOID OVEREXPOSURE WITHOUT ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO HIGHLY
WOOD DUST CO NTAMINATED AREAS, IT MIGHT CAUSE EYE, SKIN,
UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT AND LUNG IRRITATION. TO SENSITIVE
PERSONS WOOD DUST MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC REACTIONS.
THE INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR RESEARCH ON CANCER (IARC)
HAS CLASSIFIED WOOD DUST AS A NASAL CARCINOGEN F ACTOR IN
HUMANS.
Avoid sparks or flame sources in highly wood dust contaminated
areas
Keep working areas free from dust,
Avoid overexposure without adequate protection in wood dust
contaminated areas,
FIRST AID ACTIONS:
If breathing difficulties are observed in individuals exposed to
wood dust, take him to open space and fresh air.
