Remembering Douglas L. Dennis

We at Revchem Composites, Dura Technologies, and Hawkeye Industries celebrate the life and accomplishments of our founder and friend, Douglas L. Dennis, who we all simply knew as “Doug”. Doug and his wife Gina Dennis started Revchem in 1975. Doug worked tirelessly over the past 40 years to build companies that reflected his own personal drive and values. He became a mentor and an example to a countless number of employees, teaching them the importance of respect, work ethic, giving back to the community, and making sure they all gave each and every customer their very best. He was fiercely passionate about the composites industry and was forever a student of his craft. I have worked for Revchem Composites for the last 4 years and worked side-by-side with Doug. We have traveled to many places, conquered many obstacles together, and spent countless hours discussing every kind of topic you could imagine. QUV tests have been performed on this product and have confirmed that SIL66BE-2880 significantly outperforms commercially available resins used for surfboard laminating. It has been reported that the product is tougher, with less compression dimples than the top selling surfboard resin and has improved impact resistance to reduce stress and deck cracks. Glassers have reported the product is user friendly with a rapid wet out of the glass. The product cures water clear with a whiter look than other resins available on the market. Silmar surfboard resins were developed and are still manufactured in Hawthorne, California since 1961. Posted on August 26, 2013 With 1,000 student-drivers per year, dings, nicks and holes can’t be avoided in Treasure Island Sailing Center’s fleet. Dave Collignon, TISC Melges24 sailor and Revchem technical applications expert, shared his fix-it expertise with 26 students using fast-setting UV-cure polyester resin. Dave’s approach for the class was clever and effective.  He used an old Laser hull with four (self inflicted) holes on the curved chine. He took them to various states of completion before class started then used each to demonstrate a different step in the repair process after students arrive.  At all times he protected the hull from “drips” with paper, and himself from “the itchies” with long sleeved shirt, glasses, respirator and long sleeves. The secret ingredient used during the clinic was UV Cure Polyester Surfboard Laminating Resin that hardens in 10 minutes when exposed to sunlight. Pot life in the shade is hours to days. Along with a few other products (available at Svendsen’s Boat Works), simple tools and mother nature – repairs can be accomplished rapidly, even over lunch between the last morning race and first afternoon race ! Dave completed the steps for a simple repair by working on four similar spots in parallel.He used a grinder to remove material around the ding – being careful to leave as much damaged glass intact as a base for the patch.   The entire repair to a real hole would easilly have been completed in an hour. SpaceX‘s Falcon 9 rocket carried the unmanned Dragon capsule into space after a 3:44 a.m. EDT launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla., marking the first time a private company has sent a spacecraft to the space station. The mission is considered the first test of NASA’s plan to outsource space missions to privately funded companies now that its fleet of space shuttles is retired. SpaceX aims to prove to NASA that its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule are ready to take on the task of hauling cargo — and eventually astronauts — for the space agency. Vacuum Bagging of fiberglass and resin parts is becoming a widely accepted and useful tool. From solid glass lay ups to complex composite structures, vacuum bagging is a technique that should, and can, be explored by even the novice boat builder.  This article only touches on the basic elements of the technique. The principle behind vacuum bagging is that of using atmospheric pressure as a tool.  At sea level, one atmosphere weighs 14.7 psi (pounds per square inch) or 29.92 inches of mercury. In the absence of a vacuum, a surface has atmospheric pressure exerted on all sides and is equal.  When a vacuum is generated on one side only, the result is an increase of pressure on the other side equal to the amount of vacuum being generated.  A one square foot area is receiving 2,116.8 ponds of pressure with a 29.92″ Hg vacuum beneath it… Necessary Equipment and Supplies: Vacuum Source: There are three principle ways to create a vacuum. •    Pumps •    Generators •    Vacuum Cleaners A vacuum pump is perhaps the simplest source and can be built from a number of readily available pieces of surplus equipment, including auto air conditioning pumps, freezer compressors, and general air compressors.   The only difference between a compressor and a vacuum pump is which side of the unit is being used.  Vacuum pumps use the intake side and compressors use the output side…  Your shop air compressor can even be called upon to do double duty. *Article from Composites World. • Author: Ginger Gardiner • Source: Composites Technology Engineering Challenge: Develop a method for vacuum infusing a laminate that increases its strength but reduces its weight by simultaneously reducing the laminate’s void content and increasing its fiber volume beyond that possible with conventional vacuum-bagging regimes. Design Solution: The double-bag infusion technique, which splits the two main vacuum functions, assigning volatiles extraction (removal of entrapped air, ambient moisture and/or solvents) to the inner bag and then using the outer bag for compaction. Double vacuum bagging was first used in the 1980s to reduce porosity and increase mechanical properties in prepreg and wet-layup composite repairs. More recently, NASA and The Boeing Co. (Seattle, Wash.) applied its basic principles to vaccum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) and infusion, achieving aerospace-quality composites out of the autoclave. Unaware of the NASA and Boeing efforts, Russell Emanis tried double bagging with resin infusion more than 15 years ago. Excited by the results, this former composite process manager on Lockheed Martin Aeronautics’ (Forth Worth, Texas) F-22 program and now district sales manager for JB Martin (St. Jean Sur Richelieu, Quebec, Canada), developed his own process and subsequently recommended it to a variety of companies, including SYBO Composites (St. Augustine, Fla.) and Air Command International (Caddo Mills, Texas). There are over 40 individual steps and 3 hours of labor that go into building every single snowboard. Snowboards are handcrafted which is a term that is thrown around a lot in the industry, but basically it means some build boards with minimal automation and with a lot of love and attention. Essentially a snowboard is made of plastic, fibreglass, wood and some steel.  Some use sublimation graphic application process for both the tops of our boards as well as the bases, which means scratch resistance and color brilliance, and that is where the board building process begins. The board is placed in a press which is a male and female mold and closes with pneumatic (or hydraulic) pressure under heat for approximately 30 minutes. Once the curing cycle is complete the press is opened and the cassette is removed. The board is taken out of the cassette and placed on a cooling rack for 24 hours to allow for the epoxy to cure completely. A bandsaw is used to trim the flash (excess material) off the board and base grinders are used to remove epoxy from the base and to flatten the running surface.  Once the snowboard has gone through the grinding process of 5 different grits of finishing belts, each progressively getting finer as the process continues, the edges are finished, the insert holes are drilled and the board is pretty much... read more

The use of composite materials for the manufacturing of racing cars was a significant milestone of achievement in the automotive industry, as the earliest racing cars were made mostly with a single aluminum chassis, which was prone to major fractures. In the late 1980s, the use of advanced composites in the racing industry caused a revolution of sorts in the world of automobile engineering. Such composites provided an apt solution for racing car chassis, as these were not only lightweight, but also sturdy and robust, offering the driver much more security, if the car were to crash. Slowly and steadily, of such materials were being used in production sports cars as well because they increasingly became cost effective, and today; in the 21st century, the use of composite materials in a car/automotive manufacturing is more or less the norm. The earliest composite materials included fiberglass, developed in the 1940s; however, this material did not make its way through to the automotive industry at that point of time, due to limitations in the then automotive engineering techniques. Today, fiberglass is used extensively for just about everything, including surfboards, building panels, boat hulls, and of course a car chassis. The advantage of composite materials over normal single layered metals is the fact that these are many times stronger and lighter than the latter. As a result, the use of such a composite material not only decreases the overall weight of the object, but is also, compared to single layered materials, much more break resistant.
